Shopify variants, options and product information: how to set them up
Share
Variants decide what a shopper can choose before buying: size, colour, material. Done well, one product page serves every combination. Done badly, you get duplicate pages, confusing dropdowns and stock that does not match. This guide covers the limits, how to decide between a variant and a separate product, and where the other product facts belong.
The terms
- Option: a type of choice, such as Size or Colour.
- Option value: one choice within it, such as Small or Navy.
- Variant: one combination of option values, such as Navy / Small. Each variant can have its own price, SKU, barcode and stock.
The limits that apply
Shopify's help says a product can have up to three options and up to 2,048 variants, up to 250 media items, and each variant can use one media item from the product's list (add variants). The same page warns that some third-party themes, apps and sales channels do not support more than 100 variants, so check yours before relying on a large matrix. You cannot save an exact duplicate of an existing variant.
Variant or separate product?
This is our rule of thumb, not a Shopify rule. Ask what the shopper thinks they are choosing.
| Situation | Usually | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Same item, different size | Variant | One page, one set of reviews and copy |
| Same item, different colour | Variant | Add one photo per colour |
| Different material or design that changes the description | Separate product | Copy, photos and specs differ |
| Different price structure that needs different copy | Separate product | The page has to explain it |
| Bundle of several items | Separate product | It has its own contents and price |
| A fourth choice (a fourth option) | Separate product, or rethink | Three options is the limit |
When two versions share most of the page, keep one product. When you find yourself writing "this version differs" paragraphs, split them.
Naming options and values
- Name the option for what the customer sees: "Size", "Colour".
- Keep value names short and unmistakable. "Navy" and "Dark blue" on one product is a naming problem.
- Use the same value names across products so filters and your own spreadsheet stay clean.
- For sizes, show the system your customers use and say so ("UK 8", "M").
What to set per variant
Shopify lets you set prices, quantities, SKUs, barcodes, HS codes and country or region of origin for each variant, or use the product's defaults (add variants). Set at least:
- ☐ Price, and compare-at price only if it is true.
- ☐ A SKU that follows one pattern, such as
TOTE-NAVY-STD. - ☐ Stock, if you track it.
- ☐ A photo for every colour.
Where size and material information goes
Variants name the choice. They do not explain it. Put explanations somewhere shoppers can find them:
-
Size guide: a page or a metafield that links to a size chart near the size selector. The metafields guide shows a
size_guidepage-reference field as an example. - Material, care, dimensions: specifications, ideally as structured fields so every product uses the same layout.
- Category attributes: when you assign a standard product category, Shopify offers category metafields such as size and colour for it (product category). Check what your category provides before you create your own.
A worked example (made-up)
A made-up tote bag comes in three colours and two sizes. That is one product with two options (Colour, Size) and six variants. Each colour has its own photo. The size guide is a page linked under the size selector. A matching laptop sleeve is a separate product, because it has its own description and price.
Test before you publish
- ☐ Select every option combination on the product page and confirm the price, photo and availability change correctly.
- ☐ Add one of each to the cart and check that the cart shows the right variant name.
- ☐ Check the page on a phone, where long dropdowns are harder to use.

Next step
The Shopify D2C Launch Kit includes a product-page copy worksheet and a metafield planning CSV with 28 rows, which cover the facts variants leave out. It is a planning resource; it does not set up your store and promises no sales.
